The short answer to this is yes. However, despite making daily overnight backups, the college can not be held responsible for any loss of your work. What's more, unless you log onto the Marjon network via your laptop, any work you do is not saved in your network area - and therefore NOT backed up. Computing Services recommend that you consistently backup your own documents on removable media such as USB memory sticks or CDs. It might even be a good idea to backup your backups as you can guarantee something will go wrong the day before a deadline!
Toshiba Laptops
Please see the
Toshiba Support document for information on getting your laptop fixed.
Dell Laptops:
If you are having a problem with the laptop you should first contact Dell using the
Dell Support Pages or call 0870 9080500 (Insurance Complete Care and Technical Faults).
It might be possible for you to fix the problem yourself. Check out some of the other FAQs and the guides section to see if your problem arises elsewhere. Another good idea might be to check with friends (maybe they've had the same problem and know how to fix it!).
If you have a technical problem with your laptop (and the answer is not on here!) your first point of call should be Computing Services.
Remember, if your laptop has a serious problem, you will have to contact Toshiba or Dell (see FAQ above).
Of course! If you have some suggestions which might be of use to other students (perhaps you've found a great open source program, or keep helping friends with the same problems) then please email Adam Read via
aread@marjon.ac.uk. Note:
do not use this email for general laptop support - see the FAQs above instead.
Actually you can! However, if you haven't already you'll need to first download the PDF add-in from the
Office 2007 website. After you've installed the add-in, simply select 'Save As PDF' from the Office menu! Check out the
How-To guide for more help. If your PDF function stops working, try re-downloading the PDF add-in, and restart your laptop.
Certain terms and conditions apply but essentially, yes. Therefore you are free to use it however you like, including installing a different O/S (such as Linux). Note, UCP Marjon cannot be held responsible for loss of data or damage to your laptop. We are also only able to support Windows operating systems (XP, Vista, Win 7). If you leave the University before completing the first year you may be required to return your laptop.
If you are connected to the College network (mjnet) then you can access and use the college printers. Please watch the tutorial video on 'adding a network printer' for more information (located in the
guides section). Note: sending documents to networked printers requires necessary 'printer credits' which you can purchase from the Library or Shop.
Some students have experienced problems when using Logitech webcams on Windows Vista. You might need to download the latest version of the webcam software.
Click here to go to the Logitech support page.
If you've forgotten your network password you need to go to Computing Services taking your UCP Marjon library card with you as identification. Unless you completed the password reset form in which case you can reset it online from
here!
Windows Vista allows you to increase the amount of system memory your laptop has by plugging in an empty USB drive. Memory is helpful for when you've got lots of programs running simultaneously and you want to improve the overall performance of your machine. You can learn more about Windows ReadyBoost
from here.
Important: not all USB drives are compatible with ReadyBoost - you can
check here for your device!
